Today I discovered an awesome map in the Mac App Store. I’ve downloaded very few apps from the Mac App Store, because typically with my computers, I’ve installed Office, and Photoshop, and a couple of other things like Dropbox, and that’s basically all I need. So while there are a ton of apps in the app store, I just never seem to find any that are worth downloading. And the ones I do find are too expensive, especially if I can get the same thing cheaper for the iPad or iPhone (I’m looking at you Angry Birds).
- Latest Mac has Siri as a built-in tool, which helps people get the latest weather forecast.
- WeatherMan 2.9.0 WeatherMan was created in 2001 as a way to gather information from the National Weather Service and display that information in a concise way in an application I also needed a way to get weather information into my home automation system so I created an application that supported AppleScript so I could use that technology to.
- Weatherman is an excellent weather information app that also has excellent applescript support making it's integration with XTension easy. It also has support for exporting the forecasts for the various increments into the future so that you can create a display similar to this, live updated in an XTension WebRemote page.

But because I have spent so much time using the iPad the last year, there are just some things that I really want an app for, rather than visiting them on the web. One of those things was a good weather app. Now, I’m a weather geek, so I don’t want to just know the current temperature. I want to know the forecast. I want to be able to see radar. I want everything. I currently bounce between three apps on my iPad and iPhone because none of them does everything I want.
Sure, on the Mac, I can visit weather.com, or the National Weather Service website. But it’s just not as convenient doing these things in your browser. Not to mention that many of the radar animations are Flash, which I try to avoid whenever possible.
Enter WeatherMan from AfterTen Software in the Mac App Store. It’s $3.99, and after reading its glowing reviews, I decided to give it a try tonight. And let me tell you, it doesn’t disappoint. Every piece of information I could possibly want is right here in this app. It lives in your menu bar, which I’ve never been a huge fan of. But it shows the current temperature and conditions, which you can customize. Click on that and you get extended forecasts, current conditions, weather alerts, etc., all in a drop down menu. Click further and you get a window that pops up, as you see above, in which you can click through all kinds of information.
It also has radar. The radar isn’t spectacular — it’s not RadarScope good, which I have on the iPad and iPhone. But I just couldn’t justify spending $30 for radar that I already have on those devices. But the radar in WeatherMan does a good job.
So if you have a Mac running Snow Leopard and you want a great weather app, check out WeatherMan in the Mac App Store. If you’re not on Snow Leopard, visit the AfterTen Software site, because they may have versions available there as well.

And if you’re on PC, seriously, give it up already, and get a Mac.
((A quick check shows that you must be running on at least 10.4 to get a working version of this for your Mac))
